Memorial weekend, the last weekend of the fifth month. It’s a holiday to honor the men and women who have lost their lives in the service of the American military.

An event that has been held on Memorial weekend since 1911 is the Indianapolis 500 Mile Car Race. The race takes place in the state of Indiana at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A two and half mile oval track originally made of bricks.

Drivers and cars come from all over world to compete for a chance to be selected for the race. Only the fastest 33 drivers will qualified for each year’s race. This year's speeds were over 224 miles per hour.

Race day begins with much fanfare of celebrities, music, dancing, and demonstrations. The race begins with the announcement “gentlemen and ladies start your engines” and the wave of a green flag. Two hundred laps around the two and half track equals five hundred miles. The first driver to complete the five hundred miles is declared the winner with the waving of a black and white checkered flag.

The 2018 winner was the Australian driver named “Will Powers”.

Attendances was estimated at over three hundred thousand people.
